Dimmable LED Desk Lamp

Brief: Inspired by the fusion of nature and the insect world, centered around combining functionality with aesthetic appeal, Mantodia is a desk lamp which is designed to serve as a conversation starter in both home and office environments.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

A rethink of the desktop lighting system integrating the beauty of nature into the living space via the light and shadow. Playing light through a dimension that doesn’t just function but also capable of conveying the warmth of home, generate curiosity, and draws emotion. Here light is not the focus, but a sensory bridge that connects perception with the natural world.

NATURE - THE ULTIMATE MUSE

The nature’s beauty lies in its unpredictability and sense of mystery. I long to draw inspiration and strength from the vast natural world and integrate them into my designs.

WHY?

Upon close observation of the insect kingdom, the unique body structure of the praying mantis captured my keen interest.

It's semi translucent in certain angle, almost ethereal body blends harmoniously into its surroundings, creating a natural camouflage that is not only practical from predators but also exudes an mysterious aesthetic appeal. It is also known for one of the most formidable predators in nature as its incredible speed, agility, and strength.

There are also the source of many interesting stories and folklore from cultures around the world. The word mantis comes from the ancient Greek word for “seer” or “prophet,” In the Greek tradition, mantises were believed to lead lost travelers home.

The elusive qualities of mantis could be incorporated into design?

Imagine a light source that appears and disappears, creating a warm and tranquil atmosphere. It would neither be too harsh nor entirely vanish into the background but instead exist in a subtle and elegant way, adding a touch of mystery and allure to the space.

A fusion of 3D-printed plastic and metal components, combined with handcrafted heat-bent styrene sheets, creates a warm glow. The translucent lampshade gently diffuses the light, casting a soft and immersive illumination.
