HERICIUM, THE FUNGI

I can't help but marvel at the wonders of the microscopic world. Tiny organisms persist and thrive, deeply rooted in nature's intricate designs. Every time I let my mind wander during leisure moments, was a scene from nature. There are textures of trees, veins of the earth, no artificial dyes added, you can even smell the fragrance of woods and plants...

“Hericium, the Fungi” is a trans-disciplinary research project that proposes a innovative, environmentally conscious, and cohesive approach of working with mycelium. This project turns organic waste into materials by growing mycelium, which is the root system of the fungi, and incorporating mushroom growth as a part of the design. Without the need of any kinds of adhesive substances, these materials are not only eco-responsible, fully biodegradable, but also simple to use, fulfilling the criteria of a circular economy.

This is an invitation to surround yourself with the enduring allure of nature, where tells a story of craftsmanship, sustainability, and the timeless beauty found in the simplicity of natural materials.

Carefully chosen only naturally shed branches, ensuring minimal impact on the natural ecology. Keeping the integrity of the branch, preserving its unique grain, cracks, and bark. These branches undergo treatment solely for cleaning and maintenance purposes.

Discussing the use of innovative materials and textures for furniture, such as natural patterns, weaves, and wood grain, how them can be used to create specific moods or atmospheres within interior spaces. Examining the role of textural contrast/mixture in furniture design, how it adds visual interest, and influences the perception of a piece.

Edible hericium abietis mushrooms picked from the furniture.

The opportunity of this project lies in fully leveraging natural resources, grounded in environmental conservation principles as the starting point, while also maximizing the recycling of waste materials. It stands as a testament to sustainability, being 100% biodegradable and leaving no ecological footprint.

Additionally, the inherent artistry of nature transcends conventional boundaries, elevating organic materials to unparalleled heights. With each mycelium furniture piece shaped by the organic growth patterns of fungi, it becomes a one-of-a-kind masterpiece, showcasing the beauty of natural evolution.
